    What is Thyroid Surgery?

Thyroid surgery, or thyroid gland surgery, is the surgical removal of all or part of the thyroid glands. Any disbalance in the production of hormones or change in the appearance of glands might raise questions. Is there any urgency for a thyroidectomy?

Thyroid surgery is performed in four situations: when the thyroid gland produces too many hormones (hyperthyroidism), when the gland produces too few hormones (hypothyroidism), when the gland enlarges (goiter), or when nodules are found on the thyroid gland.

    What Are Thyroids?

The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland that can be found in the front part of the neck, just above the collarbone.

The thyroid gland plays a vital role in controlling critical functions of the human body. It produces thyroid hormones that carry blood to every tissue in the body. It also helps in metabolism and controls the temperature of the body, plus it helps maintain muscle control, brain development, the menstrual cycle, and bone health. When your thyroid gets out of balance, i.e., underproducing or overproducing hormones, it can cause bothersome disorders such as fatigue, weight loss, irritability, weight gain, and more.

    Thyroidectomy Procedure

Before the doctor starts the surgery process, they will order imaging tests or an ultrasound. It helps in diagnosing the type of disorder and size of the gland to be removed.

The surgeon will give you general anaesthesia followed by an incision in your neck, depending on the type of surgery. The thyroid gland will be carefully removed in its entirety (all) or in part after the surgeon makes an incision over it. The surgery takes between 2 to 4 hours, depending on how much thyroid tissue the surgeon removes. Once your surgery is done, the incision will be closed with stitches (sutures).

What are the common disorders affecting the thyroid glands?

    1. Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid): This condition happens when the thyroid gland starts producing more hormones than your body needs. There are numerous possible causes of hyperthyroidism, including Graves' disease (the most common), thyroid nodules (or lumps), excessive iodine intake, thyroid inflammation, or medication that promotes hormone production. It can result in a rapid heartbeat, frequent bowel movements, and unintentional weight loss.

    2. Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid): It occurs when your thyroid gland fails to produce the necessary hormones. The frequent cause of hypothyroidism is an autoimmune disease commonly known as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. It can cause slow metabolism, fatigue, cold intolerance, weight gain, and fatigue.

    3. Goiter: Goiters are formed when your thyroid gland starts growing irregularly or when it develops a small lump (or lumps). It can be caused by Graves’ disease, Hashimoto’s disease, inflammation of the glands, pregnancy, or nodules. Goiter results in swallowing and breathing difficulties, hoarseness in the voice, coughing, and more.

      Frequently Asked Questions

Thyroidectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures carried out in India. Approximately 1% of the Indian population gets diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, whereas the occurrence of hypothyroidism in the common population is 4-5%.
Before your thyroid gland removal surgery, your doctor may recommend that you stop drinking or eating anything after midnight. Be sure you ask your doctor for specific instructions about every meal and activity the day prior to your surgery.
The health care provider commonly uses general anesthesia, which means you’ll be totally asleep during the thyroid operation and a breathing tube will be placed to help your breath.

In some cases, patients are diagnosed with a slow-growing type of thyroid tumour or a non-cancerous thyroid tumor, where surgery is not urgent and can be delayed. The doctor might suggest you take some pills to control the hormones and monitor the situation.

After you go home, your doctor will suggest that you take some rest and stop strenuous physical activities. You might be asked to come again after 2-3 days to remove the drain that was placed during the surgery under the incision.
Thyroidectomy complications may include: bleeding and infection for some hours after the operation; sore throat; voice change or hoarseness; injury to the esophagus; low parathyroid hormones; overproduction or underproduction of hormones.
