What is Laser Sphincterotomy?
Laser sphincterotomy is the treatment of problems related to your anus using lasers during the surgery. Laser treatments are being employed increasingly common in a variety of surgical operations as they involve a less invasive option and minimal damage to the sphincter muscles.
Anal surgery is required for any anal discomfort such as pain, bleeding, and irritation near the sphincter muscle, pus and blood in the stools, or difficulty controlling the bowel movement. Depending on the type and location of the discomfort, various surgical options may be used to treat this unpleasant condition. This treatment can be classified as laser fissure surgery, laser fistula surgery, laser piles surgery, and laser pilonidal sinus surgery.
Laser Anal Surgery Procedure
The laser anal surgery procedure is a minimally invasive one that may also require some preparations before the surgical procedure. The procedure involves using a laser beam to destroy, repair, or remove the scarred or infected tissue area following local or spinal anesthesia.
Painkillers are given to the patient after the surgery to relieve the pain. It is critical to maintain soft stools for the next 5 days by eating fiber-rich foods and using a stool softener. So, your doctor may provide you with a diet chart and activities to avoid after the surgery.
Common Disorders Causing Anal Discomfort
Hard stools: Continuous hard stools overstretch the anal opening, causing pain and bleeding from the anal. Fiber-rich foods can be added to the diet to make stools soft.
Frequent diarrhoea or constipation: Irregular bowel movements on frequent days cause tearing of the delicate anoderm (anal tissue).
Previous surgery: A tear or infection may also occur during the insertion of the laser device during surgery.
Anal intercourse: It can increase the risk of bacterial infection. It can also lead to anal cancer or other sexually transmitted diseases.
Childbirth: About 40% of pregnant women suffer from anal discomfort such as anal fissures or hemorrhoids.
Rare causes: Such as Crohn's disease, anal cancer, herpes, tuberculosis, HIV, viral infections, etc.
List of Laser Surgeries:
- Fissure Surgery: Cutting the sphincter muscle to reduce pain and relax the anal tissue.
- Fistula Surgery: Treatment of an anal fistula- a tunnel formed inside the anus connecting it to the skin.
- Piles Surgery: Removal of internal or external hemorrhoids- swollen blood vessels.
- Pilonidal Sinus Surgery: Surgical treatment of infected pilonidal sinus—a small hole at the top of buttocks.
Cost of Laser Anal Surgery
The cost of laser anal surgery varies according to the type of disorder and the type of surgery required. The average cost of laser anal surgery in India is usually between 50,000 and 90,000 INR. However, the price of hospitals in different cities is different.
