What is Skin Laceration?
Skin laceration, commonly known as a "wound," is the most common disorder affecting the human body. It is a cut or tear on your skin tissue or muscle that can be of any size, shape, and depth. They are most commonly caused by an injury or being struck with great force. Laceration can be minor or severe, depending on how severe it is.
Skin Laceration Treatment
Minor lacerations, i.e., lacerations that do not bleed or cause infection, might not require repair. Some over-the-counter medicines, ointments, and bandages are enough to treat the wound. A major laceration might need medical attention before it gets infected or leaves a scar. Laceration surgery includes three stages: cleaning, treatment, and closing the wound.
Causes & Symptoms of Skin Laceration
Laceration can occur due to an injury or blunt trauma: either your skin gets hit by some high external force or a sharp object, or you hit some object with excess force.
Symptoms
- Intense scarring
- Dirt and debris in the wound
- Exposed muscle or fat
- Bleeding from the wound
Treatment of Skin Laceration
Dermabond
This is a special glue used to hold the wounded skin together. They are frequently used for minor laceration but may be ineffective for major injury or laceration over joints.
Stitches
This method of treatment is used for deep laceration where the wound is bleeding or muscle is exposed. Stitches or sutures use surgical thread and a needle to stitch and close the wound.
Staples
Using this method, your doctor will close the wound edges and align them. Saline water is used to clean the staple line, and then staples are placed along the wound. For faster healing, a doctor may apply ointment and a bandage to the wound.
Advantages
- Relieves pain and burning
- Avert further infection
- Prevents blood loss
- Less scar
- Better lifestyle
Challenges
- Bleeding and infection
- Scarring
- Allergic reaction to some chemicals
- Ischemia
- Itchy skin during recovery
Cost of Skin Laceration Repair
The cost of skin laceration treatment in India ranges from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 50,000. However, it can vary depending on several factors, such as hospitals in different cities, the extent of severity, the patient’s co-morbidity, and many others.
