What is Breast Lump?
Breast lumps are growths of tissue that develop within the breast and make the tissue feel different, such as a small bulge, swelling, bump, or hard area within your breast or under the arm (armpit). Some lumps are signs of cancer, but many are not. Breast lumps can be caused for a variety of reasons. It may vary in size and texture (hard or spongy) and may cause pain or go unnoticed.
Diagnosing a lump in the breast can be frightening. Breast cancer accounts for nearly 14% of all cancer cases in India, with the majority of victims being women, but it is not the only cause of lumps. In most cases, the lump is benign (non-cancerous), but it can be an indication of cancer. So, its recommended that you consult a doctor if you notice even a small bump or change in the breast.
Breast Lump Removal Surgery or Lumpectomy
The process to remove cancerous and non-cancerous tumours from the breasts is called breast lump removal surgery, commonly referred to as a lumpectomy. The excision of a benign breast lump usually includes the removal of the mass itself as well as a small quantity of the surrounding healthy tissues. A range of techniques, including broad excision, partial mastectomy, and breast-sparing surgery, can be used to accomplish this. The least intrusive surgery to remove a lump from the breast is a lumpectomy.
If the lump node is cancerous, lumpectomy surgeries can be followed by other treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and hormone therapy. A study shows that lumpectomy surgery followed by therapy is as successful in treating breast cancer as mastectomy surgery (which removes the entire breast).
Causes & Symptoms of Breast Lump
There are several factors that can affect your Breast such as Hormones, Breast cancer, Fibroadenomas (solid lumps), Breast cysts(fluid), Breast abscesses and many other health problems.

Treatment of Breast Lump
Lumpectomy
Most of the time, the lump doesn't require treatment, but if someone does, doctors might suggest surgery after carrying out a biopsy to test the size and location of the lump. The treatment for removing the breast lump involves a 5-step procedure, explained as follows:
1. Anaesthesia: The breast lump removal surgery is performed under general anaesthesia.
2. Incision: Your surgeon will tailor the surgery and make an incision as per the size and location of the lump.
3. Removal of cancer: The surgeon removes the lump and a margin of healthy breast tissue through an incision. To ensure that all malignancy has been removed from the tissue, a pathologist examines a sample of the excised healthy tissue.
4. Close the incision: Surgical tape or a skin adhesive is used to close the skin after layering sutures are placed in the tissue to close the wound.
5. Therapy: Surgeons usually follow the surgery with chemotherapy or radiotherapy if the nodes removed are malignant (cancerous).
In some cases, cancer also spreads to the lymph nodes, resulting in life-threatening cancer. As a result, your doctor will perform a sentinel lymph node biopsy as well as surgery to remove lymph nodes in your armpit to see if cancer has spread to them.
