What is Parathyroid Gland?
The parathyroid glands are two pairs of small, pea-sized, oval-shaped glands. These are located just behind the thyroid gland in your neck. They produce parathyroid hormones, which control the calcium level in the bloodstream. It also helps in regulating the nervous system, build body muscles, and keep your bones strong.
Parathyroid Gland Surgery (Parathyroidectomy)
A parathyroidectomy is a surgical procedure that removes all or part of your parathyroid glands and a parathyroid tumor. It is performed if your parathyroid gland fails to produce enough hormones (commonly referred to as hypocalcemia) or if it produces too many hormones (commonly referred to as hypercalcemia). A cancerous tumour, a non-cancerous tumour (adenomas), and an enlarged parathyroid gland are some of the symptoms of a diseased parathyroid gland.
Parathyroidectomy Procedure
The parathyroid gland is removed in part or entirely during the surgery, which is performed under general anaesthesia. About a week prior to surgery, you must stop taking any medications that prevent blood from clotting.
Your surgeon will tailor the surgery and make an incision near the gland (around 4 cm) after scanning the diseased parathyroid gland. Tumours can be diagnosed through a sestamibi nuclear medicine scan, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The surgeon then dissects the abnormal gland with no risk to the vocal cords or other organs.
Surgical tape or a skin adhesive is used to close the skin after layering sutures are placed in the tissue to close the wound.
Common Disorders Affecting the Parathyroid Gland
Hyperparathyroidism: This condition occurs when the parathyroid gland starts producing more parathyroid hormones (PTH) than your body needs. This increases the calcium level in the blood (hypercalcemia), resulting in joint pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, loss of appetite, and many more symptoms.
Hypoparathyroidism: Hypoparathyroidism is a condition where the parathyroid gland produces a less parathyroid hormone (PTH). It can be caused if any of your parathyroid glands are damaged by certain autoimmune diseases or genetic conditions (also known as DiGeorge syndrome in children). Tingling in the fingers and toes, muscle cramps, anxiety, and depression.
Parathyroid Surgery Includes:
- Adenoma: Treatment of a non-cancerous tumour affecting the parathyroid gland.
Cost of Parathyroid Gland Surgery
The cost of parathyroid gland surgery varies depending on the size of the tumour, the affected gland, the patient's co-morbidities, and a variety of other factors. The average cost of a parathyroidectomy in India can be approximately 80,000 INR if performed under local anaesthesia and a little more for general anaesthesia, including hospitalisation and medications.
